Martyn's Law for conference and events venues

Conference centres and events spaces vary by booking, so your capacity depends on the largest event you reasonably expect to host. Events of 800 or more may bring enhanced duties.

Working out your number

Base your figure on the largest event you reasonably expect, including delegates, exhibitors, contractors and staff.

What good procedures look like

Evacuation

Plan routes for each room layout you offer, and share them with event organisers.

Invacuation

Identify protected internal halls or rooms where delegates could wait safely.

Lockdown

Agree who secures entrances and how this works when an external organiser is running the event.

Communication

Decide how you and the event organiser would warn every room, including breakout spaces.

Get procedures written for your conference or events venue

Answer questions about your layout, exits and staffing, and your pack turns them into procedures and a staff briefing for your premises.

Five quick questions. About a minute. A preliminary check, not legal advice.

2. Is that the main use of the building, or the part of it you control?
Include staff, contractors and volunteers. Count regular busy times, not a one-off you could not expect.
