Martyn's Law for nightclubs and music venues

Many clubs and live music venues are likely to be in scope, and larger ones may fall into the enhanced tier at 800 or more. Crowds, low light and loud sound make good procedures essential.

Working out your number

Use your licensed capacity and your busiest real event as a guide, and count staff, performers, crew and security.

What good procedures look like

Evacuation

Plan for moving a dense crowd in low light. Decide which exits staff open, and when, and how you will tell people to disperse once outside rather than gather near the venue.

Invacuation

Identify where people could shelter if the threat is outside, such as away from queues and entrance areas.

Lockdown

Agree how doors are secured, who decides, and how door staff and venue staff work together.

Communication

Loud sound is the main barrier. Agree how the music is stopped, who makes the announcement, and the words they will use.
